Must be heard to be believed) - Mengele - Senseless Extermination (same band as Thrashing Relics, speed up your ass) - National Napalm Syndicate - same (good thrash w/ slightly annoying vox) Necromancer - Downfall (bad fucking ass.) Prestige - Attack Against Gnomes (every bit as awesome as the cover art suggests. That's a lot) Protected Illusion - everything (killer band, made a few demos and 2 7"s but never got signed) - Statue - Comes to Life (lovely record, maybe an acquired taste, grew on me) - Stone - well, duh. Dunno where this sudden OSDM trend came from (a lot are from Razorback Records though), but even bands that were around back then are suddenly getting resurrected and just decided to drop an album like Asphyx or Seance. To be honest, I haven't been keeping up with 09 metal that well, but let's give this a shot anyway. Maim - From the Womb to the Tomb As mentioned above, Autopsy is all over this shit, and while they never reach that level of greatness, the album is still very enjoyable. The Chasm - Farseeing the Paranormal Abysm Was definitely waiting for this from one of the most well-known Mexican DM bands out there. Some of my favorites on this shit are the instrumentals, and they take up around 26 minutes of the one hour playing time of this album. They never get boring. Vasaeleth - Demo MMIX Two tracks. That's all there is to this demo, two tracks, but those two tracks are excellent. Funebrarum - The Sleep of Morbid Dreams I liked Columns more because of the doom-like shadow that's all over the album, and when I listened to this I almost thought I was listening to Grave for a second. Kinda sounds negative, but I love Grave and this album's good, even though I do miss the doom influence. Embrace of Thorns – Atonement Ritual Gotta mention that war metal is all over the place this year as well. I had only heard For I See Death In Their Eyes and remembered liking it. To my surprise, these guys actually had a new album out. If you liked Necros Christos' Triune Impurity Rites this release is made for you. What's interesting to note is that EoT's Greek, but they do not sound Greek in the slightest (those familiar with the Greek BM scene will notice what I mean). Archgoat – The Light-Devouring Darkness More war metal. Archgoat have been around for a while and if you play this shit right next to their old shit, you won't see a huge change in sound. Still a great album. Ulcerate – Everything Is Fire I left a comment on this torrent, so lemme go look for that bad description. I usually skip over most things technical or brutal, but I would've missed a fine album if I skipped it. I love how it moves at such a trodding, sludgy pace while also drawing influence from Obscura (the album, not the band). Definitely recommended to those looking for something fresh in death metal. Carnagoth - Forced to Suffering Here's another demo, this time 4 tracks and wandering into the brutal territory from time to time. The riffs on this one are crazy, taking you all over the place like a fucking rollercoaster. Embalmed Souls - Six Rites of Possession Embalmed Souls have been around since the 90s, just throwing out random demos and barely getting any attention. Each and every one of their demos have been phenomenal, and Six Rites doesn't disappoint. I've read somewhere that they record their music live to give it "its most natural feel." The result of that is a real thick and warm sound with no oddities or distracting quirks. Great demo. Abnorm - Schemes of Hate and Denial French black/death (but not war metal!) that's going unnoticed at the moment. Full of tremelo-picked goodness and black metal ferocity that occasionally breaks into death/doom parts. Wonderful demo. - Tribulation - The Horror I talked about how dozens of bands are creating old-school albums, but what's cool is that Tribulation doesn't really fall into that crowd. I dunno, there's just something else about this release that prevents me from seeing it as just another new OSDM album. Eroded - Eroded Italians that love the Swedish sound. A compilation of demo material, but I feel this is good enough to be mentioned here. - Krypts - Open the Crypt Another cool 4-track demo, this time sounding absolutely wicked but with one guitar that occasionally breaks up the evil with its melody. Good shit from Finland. Stench of Decay - Where Death and Decay Reign While I'm on the subject of Fins, I might as well throw this one out there. I'm bad at describing shit, and this is taking a toll on my poor descriptive powers so I'll just say that their name describes them perfectly. Great Finnish death. Morbid Flesh - Dying Lapidation Another Demo! Filthy old-school shit right here, and there's a cool cover of Scream Bloody Gore at the end for you Death fans. These guys hail from Spain and only further prove to me that Spanish-speaking countries are just fucking good at metal. Grave Miasma - Exalted Emanation Fuck this turned out to be great. I've seen Teitanblood's Seven Chalices get dropped here a couple of times and you folks are missing out if you haven't heard this. A great MCD (35 minutes long though) of black/death or war metal, however you like to refer to the style. - Slugathor - Echoes from Beneath More Finnish shit. I was really pleased with their first album, Unleashing the Slugathron which came out in 02 or 03 so it was nice to see a new album from these guys. Pretty dark shit, heavy as fuck etc etc oh and gives me a real good Demigod vibe, and since I've seen Slumber of Sullen Eyes mentioned a couple of times, some people here should be all over this shit. - Beherit - Engram For those of you just passing by this list of awful descriptions and unknown bands, I hope you at least recognize Beherit out of all this. Very pleased to see a well-done comeback from these guys. It never hits the level of Drawing Down the Moon to me, but hey, I like it... a lot. Denial - Catacombs of the Grotesque Crushing album, this time from Mexico. I was initially attracted to this band after seeing how many Cenotaph members they had in their lineup, and Cenotaph is another common Mexican death metal namedrop, alongside bands like The Chasm or Shub-Niggurath. Onto the album, god this shit reminds me of old Monstrosity forcibly bonded with Demilich. Grotesque in every sense of the word and definitely a good debut. - Miasmal - Miasmal Okay so this is 2008... but Nuclear War Now! are gonna re-release this in 2009 and I want to mention it because I just noticed miasma is such a cool word. Fucking chainsaw riffs all over this bitch, Carnage comes to mind when listening. Claws - Absorbed in the Nethervoid Shit reminds me of the Swedish Crematory if you've ever heard of them. This is just one of the many wins on Razorback Records. Some pretty cool doom riffs here, just like Hooded Menace (who's also on Razorback, surprise). Witchmaster - Trucizna This is actually black/thrash, and it's dope. I'm exhausted and I'm done for now. Just listen to this. Anyway, there's some cool stuff being mentioned here. Arckanum's new album is nice, they're such a consistent band. Antikosmos last year was kinda weak, but I wouldn't call it bad, just the low-point of their discography. Second wave black metal fans should be all over their 2009 release. Besides them, I haven't really heard much of 09 black metal, but have heard of a lot of the things being mentioned here. Wouldn't really add most to my own personal list of Good Shit 2009 so I'm hoping to find more whenever I feel like it. Didn't mean to dump so much shit here now that I look at it, but I've gone over all of these and can definitely second each one. Can't list any favorites at the moment, though. ---------------------- locohla death metal: Sorcery - Bloodchilling Tales Purtenance - Member Of Immortal Damnation Agressor - Neverending Destiny (French death/thrash) Carnage - Dark Recollections Morgoth - Cursed - Sadistik Exekution - The Magus (Australian death/thrash) - Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence - Thanatos - Emerging From The Netherworlds (Dutch death/thrash) Uncanny - Splenium For Nyktophobia God Macabre - The Winterlong Crematory - Denial Bloodstone - Hour Of The Gate Magnus - I Was Watching My Death (Polish, but fucking incredible) Mordicus - Dances From Left - Utumno - Across The Horizon - Merciless - The Awakening (a bit thrashy, but fits well enough) Expulsion - A Bitter Twist Of Fate (stellar doom death) Epitaph - Seeming Salvation Carbonized - For The Security Sentenced - Shadows Of The Past lohocla female fronted: Znowhite (speed/thrash) Chastain (heavy metal) Jurassic Jade (thrash) Nuclear Death (death/grind, SICK vocals, really awesome) Wench (thrash, all-female) Original Sin (speed, all female) Megace (thrash/prog) Detente (thrash) Fear of God (thrash/heavy) Sacrilege (crust/thrash/doom, depends on the album) The Great Kat (weirdness)
